The oldest material on Earth is actually older than the Earth itself. In 1969, the Murchison meteorite fell near Murchison, Australia, breaking into several pieces. About 100 kilograms of the meteorite was sent to various scientific institutions around the world for research. In January 2020, a study was published showing that the fragments of the meteorite contained microscopic grains that were between 4.6 and 4.9 billion years old – with the oldest grain being 7 billion years old.
